Dr Akin Fapohunda was born on October 11, 1953. He attended St Peters Primary School “A” Isona, Ilesa, Osun State from 1959-1964 and Ilesa Grammar School from 1965-1969. He was at the University of Ibadan for a Bachelor of Science Degree from 1972 to 1975, and at the University of Wisconsin at Madison from 1978 to 1980, for a Master of Science Degree in Remote Sensing & Environmental Monitoring. Finally, he returned to the University of Ibadan, graduating with a Ph.D. degree in Digital Soil Variability Studies. He is thus an Agronomist, as well as a Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing & Environmental Monitoring Specialist.
He joined the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in August 1976; served as pioneer Head of Computer and Information Services at the Raw Materials Research & Development Council (RMRDC) in 1989; and became the pioneer Director, Planning, Research and Data Bank at the then National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) in January, 1992. In 1999, he was Director, Space Science Office in the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, from where he voluntarily retired in December 2000.
He is an Executive Director of Aflon Digital Institute, Kuje, Abuja that has trained over 16,000 graduates in a variety of Information Technology disciplines. In 2011 alone, an IT Training Event for 520 Primary and Secondary Schools Teachers and 600 Civil Servants was successfully undertaken for the FCTA. He was the IT Competency Evaluation Consultant to the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) for the selection and appointment of permanent secretaries from among directors
In September 2009, he was appointed as visiting senior lecturer in Multimedia Technology and Digital Image Processing at Bingham University, Karu, Abuja. He was an IT Adviser to the Planning Group that mid-wifed the establishment of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State.
He was first elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2011 as the representative of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) into the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria); where he is the Chairman of the Committee to fast track the review of the IT Curriculum at all levels of the Nigerian educational system. On December 13, 2013, Dr Akin Fapohunda was elected to the Professional Fellowship of the Nigeria Computer Society.
Dr. Fapohunda is a technical writer and publisher of several books seeking to bring the knowledge of Computer Science to the level of everyone in Nigeria. He is married with three (3) children; all of whom are M.Sc. Level Degree Information Technology specialists.
