IMG_20140615_101210The Proprietor and Executive Director of Aflon Schools is Dr. Akin FAPOHUNDA. He was born on October 11, 1953. He attended St Peters Primary School “A” Isona, Ilesa, Osun State from 1959 to 1964 and Ilesa Grammar School from 1965 to 1969. He then proceeded to the University of Ibadan in August, 1972, graduating as the BEST DEPARTMENTAL STUDENT in June, 1975 with 2nd Class Upper Honours in Agronomy. In June, 1980, he was at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, graduating with M.S. in Remote Sensing & Environmental Monitoring; and then at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan (February, 1986) with Ph.D. in Digital Soil Variability Studies.

He undertook Remote Sensing and Digital Image Interpretation training at the famous International Institute for Aerospace Studies and Earth Sciences (ITC), Enschede, the Netherlands (1982) and at the National Aeronautic and Space Administrations‘ (NASA) Technology Application Centre, University of New Mexico, AlbuquequeU.S.A (1986). He is thus trained as an Agronomist, as well as a Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing & Environmental Monitoring Specialist. The Ph.D. work in Computerised Analysis of Multivariate Parameters of Soil Systems served as the springboard for the transition and transformation from being an Agriculturist into an Information Technology (IT) professional since 1986.

He joined the Federal Public Service through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in August 1976; served as pioneer Head of Computer and Information Services at the Raw Materials Research & Development Council (RMRDC) in 1989; and became the pioneer Director, Planning, Research and Data Bank at the then National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) in January, 1992. He in effect, advanced quite rapidly to the position of Federal Director (Grade Level 17) in just fifteen (15) years and at the age of 39.

In 1999, he was Director, Space Science Office in the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government of the Federation, from where he Voluntarily Retired in December, 2000. He is one of the Executive Directors of Digital Trust Ltd/Gte; an IT popularisation Non-Government Organisation (NGO) and Aflon Digital Institute at Kuje, Abuja that has trained over 16,000 graduates in a variety of Information Technology disciplines. In 2011 alone, an IT Training Event for 520 Primary and Secondary Schools Teachers and 600 Civil Servants was successfully undertaken for the FCTA.

Since September 2009 to date, he has been the IT Examination Consultant to the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) for the Selection and Appointment of Permanent Secretaries from among Directors. He has thus been part of the processes for the selection and appointment all currently serving Permanent Secretaries in the Federal Public Service, at Abuja.

Aflon Schools comprise a Primary School (Aflon Digital Academy), Secondary School (Aflon Digital College) and Tertiary and Vocational Education School (Aflon Digital Institute) all operational on a six (6) hectares campus at Kuje, Abuja. In September, 2009, he was appointed as Visiting Senior Lecturer in Multimedia Technology and Digital Image Processing at Bingham University, Karu, Abuja. He was an IT Adviser to the Planning Group that mid-wifed the establishment of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State that was licensed in May 2012 by the Federal Ministry of Education.

He was first elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2011 as the representative of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) into the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria); where he is the Chairman of the Committee to fast track the review of the IT Curriculum at all levels of the Nigerian educational system. On December 13, 2013, Dr Akin Fapohunda was elected into the PROFESSIONAL FELLOWSHIP of the NIGERIA COMPUTER SOCIETY. This testifies to a very unique, but quite a trail blazing transition from being an AGRICULTURAL SCIENTIST to an INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Professional through self-education and focussed personal development.

On January 18, 2013 was nominated by the National Planning Commission to serve as a member of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for the Development of the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP), 2014 to 2044 for Nigeria. He was subsequently elected as the Coordinator of the ICT Sub-Panel.

Dr. Fapohunda is a technical writer and publisher of several books seeking to bring the knowledge Computer Science to the level of everyone in Nigeria. He is married with three (3) children; all of whom are M.Sc. Level Degree Computer Science specialist professionals in USA (Zephyr Health Technologies, San Francisco), UK (DuechBank, London) and Nigeria (MTN, Abuja) respectively.
